The House of Lords science committee have recently criticised the trend of ‘fast fashion’ which has developed in recent years. They feel that it is contributing to the spiraling amounts of domestic waste. Textiles make up 3% of the 30m tonnes of waste collected from households by local authorities each year. With cheaper shops like Primark becoming more popular it seems that people are willing to ditch the old fashioned idea of a few ‘good’ pieces in favour of cheap, poor quality garments that are worn a couple of times then flung. Fashions come in and out swiftly and are often so outlandish that garments are chucked after no time at all, causing an increase in waste clothes.

However the average household disposable income has dropped by £2,500 in the past year – for the first time in just over a decade! So now does not appear to be the time for shoppers to swap cheapy clothes for expensive ethical, long lasting purchases.

Despite the drop in general spending, charity shops are experiencing a boom in sales. The British Heart Foundation, one of Britain’s biggest chains of charity shops with 560 stores, says sales are up by as much as 6%, and sales at Oxfam stores across the country have been seen to rise 7% in a year. Charity Finance magazine reports that profits across 72 charity shops are up 7.4% this year, and that sales have risen 5.7%. Whilst many chain high street stores are putting plans to expand on hold, the BHF is planning to up their stores by 40 and Age Concern is also opening more stores after seeing their sales rise by 9% last year.

Fashionistas are now becoming environmentally aware, realizing that they can get a unique vintage look from charity shops whilst preventing extra dumping of old clothes. Fashion experts have noticed a positive change in people’s attitudes towards charity shops, and it’s a step in the right direction that these secondhand purchases are not just driven by their low cost. “There has been exposure of certain high street retailers who have not been clean as they should be in their supply base, so if you want cheap clothes and a clean conscience then a charity shop is an obvious route,” says Jane Shepherdson, the former boss of Topshop.

With the boom of eBay and schemes such as the recent Visa Swap clothes exchanging event in London, fronted by Lindsay Lohan, it’s no longer embarrassing to wear second hand goods, in fact it seems to be a bit of a cool-status boost, with models like Agnes Deen boasting about purchasing from charity shops. “For shoppers who love the dig-and-delve experience of shops like TK Maxx, there is really not much difference in going to a charity shop – it is all about enjoying the experience of finding a bargain,” says Lorna Hall, executive editor of fashion trade journal Drapers. Most importantly, “A certain section of consumers are turning their back on fast fashion and like the idea of recycling.”

Oxfam have been trialing some clothes-only stores which sell a mix of fair-trade garms, items made from recycled fabrics and vintage clothing which will appeal to London’s fashion conscious. David McCullogh, deputy chief executive of Oxfam, says, “We are not in that place where charity shops used to be, where people come to us because they have no money and nowhere else to go. We think we are much more attractive as somewhere where you can find unusual, interesting and one-off pieces of clothing,” It seems that by being environmentally savvy with your clothes you could be turning yourself into an unassuming fashion icon!

Becoming an Ecotourist

As we see the setting sun we start wondering whether the sun is giving a final bow to this beautiful earth. Vast destruction of habitat and environment does create a sense of helplessness and loss. Well, there was a sadness within me, which prompted me to do what the fashionable thing to do. I am an eco-tourist by choice not compulsion or fashion. I believe in all things natural. I was born with an extreme case of curiosity and grew up in the bush in Eastern India. Father being a forest officer; often took us for jaunts deep into the forests, off the beaten tourist’s tracks. We did not have enough neighbors to so to the odd rabbits or mongoose used to be the only friend’s I ever had, and have course the tall trees, surrounding our bungalow.
I learned through observation. I watched and listened and before too many seasons had passed I knew first hand the life cycle of frogs, foxes, jackals etc. The lessons I learned didn’t come with value judgments. These animals just “were” and their behavior was unique to each species and in some cases such as the three-legged mama jackal, unique to each individual. I loved the smell of wild flowers as we went for evening walks with my mother alongside the jheel in Hazaribagh. I learned to identify the wild berries from poisonous ones to the useful ones. Hazaribagh National Park was more or a bird sanctuary where we could get to see variety of birds. My father was an avid birder and would keep his field glasses on one side and Salim Ali’s book on the other. The moment we used to see an unusual bird my father would either one of us to identify it.
These were the days when spanking was still an acceptable method of disciplining a child. I brought home a bouquet of flowers for my mother and I got walloped because Dad was very annoyed when I plucked the flowers from his garden. Anyway this was nothing but value addition for me. Consequently, I learnt to admire the flowers only in their natural surroundings and to this day I never present a bouquet on any occasion.
Where to Begin

Let’s talk about you. How do you start? You obviously can’t live my childhood and have my parents so, the next best thing is to start in your backyard. If you live in an apartment, your local park will do and if you don’t have one of those, any place birds are, like house sparrows or pigeons are good. Make a mental note of the surroundings. Every living creature needs three things for survival: Water, shelter and food.
Now observe what is living there from plant to animal life. The questions to ask and to observe for answers are:
·	What shelter is there? Look for both natural and human provided
·	What food source is there? Is it native, introduced or human provided
·	Where does the wildlife get its water? Does rain collect in a low spot and if so is the plant matter of a different species or density? Does the low spot keep water in a puddle for a short time?
Becoming Curious and Arousing it
Your curiosity is piqued.
·	You need more information and you probably want to go further a field.
·	Look in your local bookstore for local plant and animal guides.
·	Those written at a local level are extremely helpful in getting to know the broader ecosystem. The authors usually have favored spots where you can find some of the gems in the guide.
·	Start looking at the history of your area. Both from a natural and a human point of view.
·	Why did a community build up around your place? How is it different now?
·	Their needs for water, shelter and food had to have been met. Go to another area and observe if it is different from your first. What are the differences? Is wildlife different? You are now beginning to look at the bigger picture and putting the smaller parts into the whole.

ECOTOURIST Is On His Way

You are on your way to becoming an Ecotourist.
·	You have an understanding of your immediate area, now other areas are intriguing you.
·	Look for clubs, continuing education courses, anything that will put you in touch with others who share the same interests as you.
·	Continue reading. If a particular region fascinates you, say The Himalayas, or the islands of Andaman and Nicobar or Lakshadvip catches your fancy, read about birds, insects, plants, people. Get as much book knowledge as you can. You will be much better prepared.
On an ECO-TOUR

You need a vacation and an Ecotour is right up your street. You understand the principles of Ecotourism and are ready to go. Check out tour operators and ask pointed questions.
·	Do they really practice what they claim they do?
·	How much money goes back to the communities where you will be visiting?
·	Will the group be small enough so you can ask questions of your guide?
Being an ecotourist makes you satisfied that at least you have done your bit in saving planet Earth.

Most of us are pretty diligent about recycling every week. For some of us, the kitchen scraps go to the composter, and glass, plastic and cans are all separated. That’s great for the kitchen, but what about the rest of the house? What most don’t realize is the home office offers a huge opportunity for eco-friendly living, but largely goes ignored.

Many don’t think twice of using high quality non-recycled paper, or tossing ink cartridges and old electronics in the garbage. Leaving a computer on overnight seems innocent enough until you multiply that energy use by millions of households.

The three main home office offenders are energy waste, paper consumption and hazardous waste. Here are some tips to make your home office a little more eco-friendly.

Put your electronics to bed at night. Connect your computer, speakers, fax, printer, etc. to a power bar and turn them all off with the flick of a switch at the end of the day. It’s a common misconception that you should leave a computer on all night. There is a peak in the power when you turn it on, but nothing compared to what it uses over a 24 hour period.

Opt for a laptop. Not only do these have the benefit of being portable, laptops consume one-eighth the power of a desktop computer. Imagine if everyone in a household all had their own computers, they still wouldn’t use the energy of one bulky desktop.

Go for the flat screen. An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or flat screen monitor uses less than half the energy of the traditional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors. Not to mention that they are easier to read, lighter and cause less eye strain.

Reuse & recycle. I had a friend who used to save any of her junk mail that was still in good condition and when doing simple printing jobs, she would use the blank side of those pages. It was such a simple concept that made so much sense, and worked great for those quick map or recipe print outs.

Save and reuse paper clips, elastics and push pins, and use rechargeable batteries and refillable toner cartridges.

For your garbage paper, keep a recycling bin next to your desk for handy use. Keep another bin nearby for expired rechargeable batteries, old inkjet and toner cartridges, or electronics. Once you have a collection built up, take them back to any Staples Business Depot for recycling.

Dead batteries should be saved and dropped off at your local waste depot for safe disposal. That corrosive acid they contain will seep out into the environment if left in a landfill site.

When buying paper, read the labels. What most people don’t realize is that much of the paper we use every day comes from old-growth forests. When you read the labels on the packages, look for: 100% recycled ( your 1st choice); or minimum FFC certification, which means the paper was made from trees grown in a sustainably managed forest.

Switch to fluorescent bulbs. A fluorescent bulb uses 2/3 less energy than a common incandescent bulb. When you add up all the bulbs in the house, that energy savings translates into saved dollars!

From the time my son was probably two months old, I would rock him and have one of those “soft cloth” books on my lap. I would hold him and point to pictures and just talk to him about the colors. As crazy as it may sound, by the time my son was a year old, I swear he would sit still and we graduated to the “chunky board books”. He would toddle into his room and bring back one book or another, usually a book with trucks or animals.

I enjoyed our quiet reading time together as much if not more than he did! I would invest in all types of books. We had Bibles for Babies, Dr. Seuss, Richard Scary, and best of all Stan & Jan Bernstein. This has become a ritual for us to read books every night before bedtime. If my husband and I happen to have a RARE night out, both grandmas also are more than happy to open up a book for him.

When our daughter was born, she was introduced to books every night as we read to the older one. She was probably a bit more advanced because we were reading books that were years above her level. When my son entered kindergarten his teacher focused on the Junie B Jones novels. What a riot! I can honestly say that I myself could not wait to see whatever Junie B’s next adventure would be. My children are now in the 7th grade and I will still faithfully buy the newest HARDCOVER Junie B Jones books (by Barbara Parks) and also and new Bernstein Bear books that are written.

One disclaimer I would like to make: Books can be very costly! Look for used book sales, trade with friends and check out garage sales. Our Elementary school had tremendous success with a used book drive. Families were able to donate and trade books, the teachers were able to pick some for their individual classrooms and the remaining books were donated to a low income after school program.

It doesn’t matter so what WHAT you read, but taking the time with your child is the foundation for a wonderful bonding experience and an irreplaceable learning tool.

Babies and extension cords are a dangerous combination. If, however, extension cords must be used around babies, here is a safety guide to help minimize the danger.

First of all, always keep in mind that all extension cords, electrical outlets, and electrical wires, pose a safety threat to babies or children. There is always the threat of electrical shock or burn to a baby or child.

Ideally, it would be wise to use an extension cord only in another room of your house, that your baby or toddler can’t enter. Keep the door closed tightly or locked.

Keep the extension cords up and out of the way of a crawling baby or curious hands of a toddler. Try using an outlet located higher up on the wall, out of a baby’s reach. If you need to run an extension cord across the floor, surround the area temporarily, for example, with a gate or any other blockade to prevent your baby or toddler from grabbing it. You may also want to hide the extension cord from your baby or toddler’s view by covering the extension cord by a carpet

If you are using the extension cord for only a short period of time, keep your baby or toddler safely confined in a play yard, within your view.

It’s never too early to teach your baby or toddler the dangers of extension cords and electrical wires. A simple example would be for the parent or adult to touch the extension cord and maybe say, ouch! or hot!. Most babies will quickly learn that simple negative response means danger.

Find alternative methods, to use in lieu of extension cords, if at all possible. If, for example, an extension cord is to be used for a lamp or stereo, try positioning these objects closer to an outlet to avoid the use of an extension cord. All electrical outlets should be covered with safety plugs or covers at all times when a baby or child is around. It’s easy to overlook sometimes, putting the safety plug or cover back on an outlet, after using an extension cord.

Plan ahead to leave your baby or child with a relative or friend, if you are only using the extension cord for a temporary project. This will obviously eliminate any possible danger to your baby by an exposed extension cord.

Finally, keep in mind that your baby’s safety should be your main priority, when making a decision that involves use of an extension cord or any other electrical wires and equipment. Then, whether or not to use an extension cord around your baby will be made with their safety at the top off your list first.

The WCS solutions provided by QC Software enables companies to streamline their warehouse operations with the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry ensuring increased corporate profitability. Now this profitable solution also contributes to lean efficiency, sustainability, green warehousing, and or conservation.  The QC Enterprise produces some benefits that allow for tier one distributors to become more green and eco-friendly,” according to QC Software’s vice-president, Jerry List.

The role of warehouse control system is critical in ensuring increased pick accuracy which translates into more efficient use of energy and resources. Additionally, the scalable or modular nature of the WCS allows the investment to be cost-justified in both the short and long-term. It can adapt to a legacy system now and a green (or greener) system in the future. List suggests, “When distribution center operations evolve because of environmental and ethical pressure, the QC Enterprise will adapt as well as provide a cost-effective solution. Since supply chain and distribution budgets are being stretched by the high cost of fuel, a WCS eliminates costly inefficiencies, which will improve the bottom line.”

Â

Warehouse control systems must address numerous challenges from multiple angles and perspectives, but if these are met they can produce benefits including a greater return on assets, increased operational capacity, reduced labor costs, increased inventory turns, an increase in picking and shipping accuracy, shorter process cycle times and improved customer satisfaction.

Â

QC Software is the leading provider of Tier 1 warehouse control systems to the warehousing and distribution industries.  Since 1996, QC Software, utilizing state of the art technology combined with extensive research, development, and rigorous testing, has developed the QC Enterprise suite of products. Designed to be modular in nature, easily configurable, and platform independent, this highly scalable solution satisfies the needs of any size warehouse.Â

Throw an eco-friendly Halloween Party no one will forget. It is easy, fun, and perhaps will get your guests thinking about the carbon footprint they are leaving for our future generations. Get your friends to “Go Green” with you.

Pick an eco-friendly place to hold your party. The easiest and most roomy place would be a local park in your community. Another option is to hold your party at your home or another friend’s home. Either indoors or outdoors, weather permitting. Think about using Organic soy candles for your lighting. Candles will add to the atmosphere of the party and helps to conserve energy.

Purchasing food will be most of your budget. It is easy these days to pick up organic and natural foods at your local grocery store. Having a hard time finding certain items necessary for your menu? Check out your local natural food store. Plan ahead and shop online. Purchase organic bulk foods from an organic bulk food supplier like www.bulkfoods.com. Buying locally is the best route to go. Got a tight budget? Shop early, scout out the best prices.

Have everyone bring an organic main dish. If your guests need some organic recipe ideas, send out handmade organic recipes with your Halloween Party Invitations. Finger foods are easy. Not too messy, colorful, and fun! Try colorful organic carrots and celery, purchase them in larger portions because it will be less expensive. Use in-season organic broccoli, cauliflower, and organic fresh fruits. Create attractive veggie and fruit platters. Ordering pre-made platters can get very expensive. Serve party guests a warm organic Fall cranberry punch. The recipe is available at www.organicauthority.com . Place some reusable scary plastic eye balls in the punch to create some scary effects. A great easy organic dessert recipe is apple and raspberry cake. The recipe can be found at www.greenfootsteps.com, look under desserts.

While decorating think about how you can reuse the decorations. Utilizing bowls of organic fruit is festive, colorful, and yummy. If using table clothes go for the organic cotton and recycle them when the party is over as receiving blankets or curtains. Use recycled Halloween ribbon or hemp twine or purchase Halloween ribbon at your local craft Store. When you think about decorating think “green” and use potted plants, herbs, and flowers. Mums are inexpensive and are a wonderful fall flower. Potted plants have a much longer life then store bought cut flowers. Go outdoors and spend a few

Biofuel sector is offering many advantages on a platter. It is generating a pool of job opportunities in farming and soon, this is going to be the domain of energy crops (those crops that are used to produce biofuel). Along with this, the production, marketing and distribution of biofuel also hold immense possibilities.

Biodiesel is made from absolutely clean, natural, & completely biodegradable sources, like soybeans and other similar recycled vegetable oils. Making use of biodiesel-empowered vehicles has not only minimized the exhaust emissions but also improved the performance of engines in US. It makes US less dependent on fossil fuels.

Food industries, agri-businesses and biofuels companies are increasingly evaluating opportunities to increase their operating margins. Whilst new products as well as facilities may create significant returns on investments but making the correct strategic decision frequently needs an understanding of difficult factors that, at times, can be outside the corporate expertise.

When comparing fossil fuels and biodiesel, fossil fuels emit considerably less level of key pollutants. Living days of CO2 emissions are roughly 1/5th as compared to the fossil fuel. The biofuels need no costly engine modifications; they are energy positive and securely biodegradable. They can play a big part in refreshing beleaguered agricultural industry.

A well-established fuel in the US fuel market today is Bioethanol. Here it is used as a petrol extender. It is rated as an alternative to various lead additives, so as to perk up the octane level of petrol.
